Walking into the fabric
To celebrate its 170th anniversary in 2016, Vlisco created an exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Helmond. ‘Vlisco 1:1 / Un à UN’ explores the history of the company and its archive. Simone Post designed a large floor painting for the entrance of the museum, inviting visitors to the exhibition and introducing them to the world of Vlisco. She based her design on the complicated and lengthy process of producing the wax fabrics which takes two weeks and involves 27 different steps and treatments. The main processes include printing the wax, dyeing, breaking the wax, printing with felt rollers, silkscreen printing, fixating and a range of possible after-treatments. In her floor painting, Simone shows three of the main stages. Vlisco patterns often have specific symbolic meanings. The Vlisco pattern Simone used as the starting point of the exhibition is called ‘Cha, cha, cha’ and is also known as ‘Change your life’.
