The beauty of waste

To show the beauty of plastic, Simone Post and Dutch photographer Mathijs Labadie made the photo series ‘Precious Plastic Diamonds’. “Up close miniscule pieces of the plastic household waste look like little diamonds and we should try to treat them as such”, Simone Post says. “We throw away plastic in very large quantities, the need for recycling this material is acute”.

In one of Simone Post’s future scenarios for plastic recycling company ECO-oh! plastics are sorted by colour. What would be the potential of the recycled material if it could be produced in only a fraction of the splendour of colours in which plastic appears in its first life and no longer only in grey? By making people aware of the value, the beauty and the potential of the material, Simone wants to help the industry to stimulate people to keep on collecting plastic waste.

The photo series originates from ‘Post-Plastic’, the research project that Simone Post did for ECO-oh!. She outlined future scenarios for the recycled plastic that the company produces out of mixed plastics.
