’t Oude Huys

An impression of a medieval fortress

Unveiling the history of Kasteel Helmond, five models created by five invited artists, show the stages the castle has gone through over time. The works are the latest additions to the permanent collection. In close collaboration with an archaeologist, Simone Post designed a model that provides an interpretation of what the original fortress may have looked like. The closed medieval fortress called ‘t Oude Huys (the Old House) is unique in its kind and has the largest floor plan of moated castles preserved in The Netherlands. It consisted of a wooden main building, outbuildings, a wooden palisade and a moat. The hundreds of thin wooden sticks Simone used in her model, refer to the wooden poles the entire fortress was built with; the red sticks representing the poles found during archaeological excavations.
